Vein Reason For Plastic Surgery

(Liz Bonis) 12/07/05 — Surveys show many people wait to have cosmetic procedures until this time of year, when they can cover up during healing. One of the more popular procedures is a newer way to get rid of ugly leg veins.For years, Joann Hastings has had painful bulging leg veins, commonly referred to as “varicose veins.”

“I don’t wear dresses with hose because [the veins] bulge out, I don’t wear shorts,” she said.

Recently, she underwent the VNUS closure procedure to ease the problem.

In the procedure, surgeons place a tiny tube called a “closure catheter” into the diseased vein. The catheter delivers radio frequency energy to the vein wall, which heats it and creates scarring.

Vascular surgeon Dr. Amy Reed said, “That scarring means that no blood will be flowing back down inappropriately to fill the vein below the knee.”

Reed said the blood is then re-routed to healthy veins, which as Joann found out just weeks later, gets rid of pain and ugly veins.

Joann has a few little red marks from stitches, but the veins are gone permanently.

She said she’s looking forward to wearing dresses, shorts, and hose, without exposing “those big ugly knots.”

Doctors say even after surgery veins can still pop up in other places on the legs if a patient is prone to getting varicose veins.

The procedure is covered by medical insurance plans if patients meet specific criteria.
